How old is too old?

Guys, I need your help and your honesty. I am a 'fashion conscious mother' with a teenage daughter, in my mid (to late) thirties and I have a dilemma. How old is too old to wear clothes like this...

...and if my daughter is starting to wear this kind of thing does that mean I should stop? The problem I have is that in my head I am still 19...23 at the oldest...and with a 17 year old of my own we are at that stage where we are very likely to go out in virtually the same outfit. I have seen those women out there who look like mutton dressed as lamb and I really don’t think I’m being like that. I don’t wear miniskirts; I couldn’t if I tried- unless I wanted to be arrested for indecent exposure. But I think I’ve still got ‘it’ and I don’t want to be old before my time. However, I don’t want to look like one of those Mums who is trying to compete with her own child! It makes me mad that I feel like I can’t wear funky stuff for fear of what others might think. What makes things worse is that I have friends who don’t have children (or their kids are still very young) and it’s totally ok for them to still be hip, but having a child who will soon be going to uni (yikes!) I kind of wonder if people think I look a bit sad dressing like my daughter.

So my question to you is; how old is too old AND does it make a difference what age your children are?

Go on, sock it to me- I can take it!

Hi B, I am also mid thirties and have a daughter who is virtually the same size as me although only 11yrs old. Fortunately she loves it when we wear similar clothes but, like you, I wonder if I should be thinking about dressing like my mother lol! But I think not. Clothes help define a person and make you feel good. So wear it if it makes you happy! Besides, you have a very young, pretty face and could carry off younger clothes for a good few years yet!

Hey Bex, I've always admired your sense of style! See the thing is, you don't look your age and your style may be young-ish but not immature. So it all works in balance with your vibe and free-spritedness!

Love it and we will fight aging to the very end. Botox with breakfast?!?!?

Wear what makes you feel good. I'm over 40 and wear Hello Kitty T-shirts.

Hoppy Easter everyone!!!

Have a great day. Best wishes.

This is a tough question. I'm probably about 3-4 years old than you and still wear funky things, but they are fashionable, better cut, more expensive fabrics and such, so that no one thinks I'm shopping at Forever 21 or another such teen store.

My rule of thumb is if I find it in a teen store, then I leave it there. If I find it in the "youthful" section of Neiman Marcus, it's fair game. LOL

I love your picture on your blog. It'd be so much fun to do your makeup.

how cute are you!!....first thank you for finding my blog...i love meeting new people and your blog is adorable....second...i think you look awesome...you need to dress in what you want to make you feel happy and because you are aware of those ladies that dress "tacky young"..(you know.. mini skirts...too much makeup..etc} ..you would never do that..."stylish young" is what you are after. I have a 19 year old ,17 year old and 13 year old(i am older than you... in my 40's)but my daughers are always in my closet borrowing...my daughters insist i look good and up to date..soooooo i say...wear what you want....life moves along too fast!!!! Looks like you have a great sense of style to me!!!
so nice to meet you....

thanks for stopping by my blog the other day. first of all you like mgmt so you are super rad anyways! i think you look darling. i'm only 28 but i feel the same way sometimes, i definatly look young and dressing my age is tricky. you just look cute and fun not trashy or like your trying to be cool. cute cute blog! and to answer your question you asked me... i don't have time. i never finish things i start, my house is alot less than it could be, and i sew and craft very rarely.

I think you should dress your style and what makes you feel beautiful!

Well, I don't have a daughter and my son is only 4 y/o so there's no way him and I are wearing, say, the same dinosaur tee shirt ... but I will say that you're only as old as you feel ... that translates into everything you do ... so if you feel like 19 or 23 (I'm about that age mentally as well) then dress like them or like a 23y/o who has much better judgment ...

And besides, it's much better to dress how you feel (and classy) than to make yourself all old ... then you'll worry about what people think because you're all old ...

hope that helps ... Hey! at least we're not in South Beach, Fl. where everyone's bikini get's smaller as they get older, right :)

Hi Bex

Clothes are there for enjoyment, wear what makes you feel good. But always have a fulll length mirror handy before you leave the house! he he he

In my opinion it's about what suits your shape and skin tone, when you get back we'll have to meet up for some shopping trips like the good ole days at lunchtime at Flextech! Oh how I miss having Oxford street just round the corner.
